Inauguration of new research facility
Inauguration of new research facility
The new research platform at the CEA, with a surface area of more than 4000 square meters, dedicated to prion diseases.
|
Located at the CEA of Fontenay-aux-Roses, the NeuroPrion facility is unmatched in anywhere in Europe by its size and infrastructures. It is destined to become a reference for research on prion diseases.
Developed as part of a research effort on prion diseases launched by the Ministry of Research, with the support of the Ile-de-France Regional Council and the Hauts-de-Seine General Council, this facility illustrates the evolution of the CEA in Fontenay-aux-Roses through an activation of research networks and a European-scale commitment.
The NeuroPrion facility: a unique installation in Europe
The NeuroPrion facility is an installation with a surface area of more than 4000 m2, dedicated to prion diseases. It comprises:
- Several laboratories equipped for research of all levels, from theoretical formalisation to immediate applications, laboratories with ranging levels of microbiological safety and A3 standard high-safety animal houses.
- A European training centre open to international collaborations which aims to strengthen the scientific and technical cooperation within the NeuroPrion network of excellence and abroad (see information on the network).
- A space to host industrial research laboratories and incubating start-ups to favour useful industrial applications.
A centre for research on prions
The new facility will be used to develop research and novel methods of investigation to resolve the uncertainties that subsist concerning risks linked to prions in terms of public health and the environment.
Several research directions will be followed:
- Upstream research: to elucidate the origins of BSE and the different basic mechanisms implicated, such as for example the interaction of the prion protein with living organisms at the cell and gene levels.
- Applied research: to find new diagnostic markers and new therapeutic targets.
- Expertise: to provide risk assessment for public health and the environment leading in particular to the development of methods for the safe disposal of contaminated material.
