Düsseldorf, October 2005

Leading experts in prion research will meet in Düsseldorf for their largest conference ever. More than 800 researchers from all corners of the world - Nobel laureates among them - will inform each other on the most current developments in diagnosis, therapeutic and fundamental research. And the general public can learn more about their research on the evening before the start of the conference at the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences.

The conference, titled "Prion 2005: Between fundamentals and society's needs", is being organised jointly by the National TSE Research Platform and the European Network of Excellence NeuroPrion.

Members of the Organisational Committee are among others Prof. Detlev Riesner, Director of the Institute of Physical Biology at the University of Düsseldorf and Dr. Jean-Philippe Deslys, Coordinator of the European Network of Excellence NeuroPrion and Head of the Prion Research Group at the Commissariat à l'Energie Atomique, near Paris.

October 18: 7 p.m.: Public Lecture as the conference opener at the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences: "20 Jahre Rinderwahnsinn (BSE)"
October 19: 9 a.m.: Opening of the conference with representatives of the Federal Ministry (BMBF), the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and the City of Düsseldorf
7:30 p.m.: Reception at K 21
October 19-21: Expert Lectures (not open to the public)
October 21: 12.15 p.m.: Press Conference with the organisers and EU representatives about Hot Topics in research and new strategies for the protection of both humans and animals.
