The NeuroPrion Network of Excellence provides the opportunity to ensure a lasting European leadership to protect human and animal health against prions and related diseases. European researchers have played a leading role in the history of TSE research even prior to the designation of the field as Prion Research. Whilst acknowledging the great efforts of the European Commission and a number of national governments, European expertise developed further in response to the BSE crisis. NeuroPrion links more than 120 research teams from 52 research institutions across Europe, which presently undertake excellent research in the TSE field. In doing so, the network combines the expertise of more than 90% of the leading research groups in Europe with individual research efforts structured to overcome some existing fragmentation. Working together, solutions to current problems in society may be more efficiently achieved. NeuroPrion, therefore, implements a new culture of collaboration among its partners, characterised by trust and the equitable exchange of information.
